About Donaldson Class
In Donaldson Class, we are a mixed Reception and Year 1 class.
Early Years Foundation Stage
Our teaching is based upon the Early Years Foundation Stage framework devised by the Department for Education. The Early Years Foundation Stage Framework is organised into several areas of learning and development:
• Personal, Social and Emotional Development
• Communication and Language
• Physical Development
• Expressive Art and Design
• Understanding of the World
This is implemented through engaging adult led activities, child-initiated activities and play in both our indoor and outdoor provision. Children are excited and motivated to learn through rich and challenging learning experiences; opportunities to explore and take risks, and first-hand experiences. Our practice is based on on-going observation and assessment of the children and their interests so that children’s learning is personalised at a point, that is suitable for their unique needs and stage of development. We also deliver our children’s learning through Projects. Consequently, our learning environments both inside and outside are regularly adapted to meet the diverse and developing needs of the children in our care. Parents at Sinnington Primary are encouraged to be actively involved in their child’s learning and are welcomed to shared learning experiences through contributing to their child’s learning journey through Tapestry and parent workshops. The Early Years Curriculum prepares children for school on multiple levels: educationally, physically, socially and emotionally. It is our intent that our Early Years curriculum plays a vital part in developing our children so that they can be successful learners and happy members of our community.
In Year 1
Our curriculum is taught through Project Based Learning and our projects are designed around a quality text with a key question that is answered throughout the project. Each project will include an ‘Ignition Day’ where we get to explore our new project either through a trip, guest speaker or engaging activities in the classroom.
We follow the White Rose Maths Scheme with a Mastery approach and we undertake Whole Class Reading, having a quality text as our class reading book, which we read as a class daily. Reading is important to us and we have a dedicated Reading area where we enjoy stories together or on our own. Writing is delivered through our projects, which gives us all a clear purpose for our writing.
Geography, History, Art and DT are all delivered through our projects and Science, RE, IT (Computing), Music, PHSE and Spanish are delivered independently through schemes of work.
Phonics and Reading
Phonics is delivered through the ReadWriteInc programme to children both in Reception and Year 1. The children are assessed at the beginning of the year and placed in groups that match their current Phonetic ability. Phonics is taught three times a week for a whole morning following a clear Scheme of Learning. The sessions include embedding previous sounds, learning new sounds, and then applying this knowledge in Reading and Writing in the morning session. The sounds are referred to on a daily basis with a clear display and Phonics area within the classroom. Children take home sounds weekly, have a specialist ‘Book Bag Book’ that is matched to their current Phonetic ability and a ‘shared’ picture book that they can share at home with family members.
